Is it funny?  Yes.   (So I've been told)

Is it a "guy movie"  Yes - leave your wives and girlfriends at home.

Is it great for kids?  No way!

The downward spiral of American culture is picking up speed!  This is an "X" rated" movie neatly wrapped up in an "R" rated package.

And no matter how much they beg - keep your kids away from this movie!

Please pass this along to all your friends with children.

My 14 year daughter wanted to see it last week with group of friends.  It's rated "R" so our standard, safe answer is usually "NO".  One of her friend's parents volunteered to take them and the parent was planning to sit through the movie with the kids.  I had a slight idea what this movie was about so we held our ground.  We refused to let her go with the group.  She was upset.

She'll get over it.

After they left, I went to the kids-in-mind site and read the description on the linked site below.  Ugh!   My suspicions were confirmed 10 times over.  I'm glad I decided not to allow her to go because she would probably need therapy when she returned.  Hopefully that parent had the sense to drag those 14 year old kids out of the theatre once this movie started.

The "Kids-in-mind" website scales the categories (violence, sex, profanity, etc) on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest.  This one was off the charts.  No academy award winner here!

Read the scene descriptions at this link.

And don't forget to bookmark this "kids-in-mind" site for future use.  Parenting is a tough job and movies like this only make our jobs more challenging.  Thank god for tools like this.

I haven't seen the movie, but definitely want to see it when it comes out on DVD.  I like that kids in mind site much better then the ones I've used.  I love reading the movie comments from sites like those, usually pretty good for a laugh.  But why do you think this is this strictly a guy movie?  I'm assuming it's a generational thing.

I agree.  I'm sure I'll watch it on DVD when it comes out but our American culture sure took a nose-dive on this one.  I'll have to listen to Mozart for a week!

"But why do you think this is this strictly a guy movie?  I'm assuming it's a generational thing."

That's the description I got from a friend who saw it.  Lots of crude, very descriptive, very visual  bathroom type humor that probably wouldn't appeal to the majority of the ladies.

My friend said "Remember that scene in Borat when Borat and his enormous friend were fighting naked in the hotel?  We'll, that scene was rated "G" compared to this movie!"

As far as it being "generational", I don't know.  (Did you read the entire description?)

I'm not old and I'm not young.  I'm 48 and my middle child turned 21 today (so today I feel old.)   Maybe the younger generation of girls might like this but I would like to think that they wouldn't.   If so, we're in a lot of trouble.  Regardless - I'm still keeping my 14 year old daughter on a real short leash.  She won't be exposed to this while under my roof.

The kids-in-mind site is good for a "play by play" of the movie and they do it without comments, critique or any bias.  "Here is the movie, here is the scene and here is what they were doing".  They count the incidences of sex and violence and even count the curse words.  It's up to you to decide what is appropriate for you or your family.   And in this case, it's more like the Manson Family!

I thought it sucked and I'm slightly embarassed that I spent $10 to see it.

I liked Borat, but it's essentially the same movie, substituting "Americans reactions to an accentric with foreigner" with "Americans reacting to overtly homosexual innuendo." Paste in 5-whole-minutes of penises

It had it's funny one-liners (all of which can be seen in the 3-minute preview...) But otherwise it's geared toward immature people who go "OMG THIS INNUENDO IS FUNNY!"

I get the humor of putting people in awkward situations and filming it but the delivery of this movie was poor, to me.

That's why I don't spend money to go to theaters anymore.  Hollywood is very good at making a crappy movie look amazing in 3 minutes.

I really feel bad for you kids today with no real actors or actresses out there. Hey maybe you should try some older movies. I know they are in black and white but I bet you get your $10.00 worth from most of them. Right Pat???
Try Bogart or Sherlock and even Charlie Chan.

"Gone with the wind".  8:00 PM tonight (Thursday 7/30) on TCM.

And this one is in color!

I've taped it on the DVR a half dozen times but I have to admit - I never sat through it.  (It's a 4 hour movie!)  I'll tape it again tonight and I can watch some tonight and the rest over the weekend.

I just bought a 50" inch high def plasma so I'll get to watch this one the way it was meant to be - back on the big screen.  The new toy is great and now I get a chance to enjoy these movies all over again.  There isn't any swinging genitalia (like Bruno) but good quality entertainment nonetheless.

And don't worry about the kids - nothing here they can't see (unless you're afraid of them seeing an academy award winning, "G" or "PG" rated movie?)

For those who are tired of the same old shock value crap out of Hollywood:

In next few days (on TCM) I suggest "The Grapes of Wrath" with Henry Fonda and a Hitchcock classic - "North by Northwest" with Cary Grant. (aka Cary "Granite" when he appeared on the Flintstones.)  Seen em' both a few times.  Great stuff!

Both of these are great primers for anyone who wants to dabble in older movies and try them on for size.   Give it a shot.  The first one is in B & W and the other is in color.  I'm sure you'll enjoy both.

Here are a bunch more that jumped out at me when I scanned the August schedule.  All are worth watching, especially if you're sick and tired of the recent Hollywood garbage.  This is just a sampling and there are many more.

Mr. Smith goes to Washington
High Sierra
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Gaslight
The Manchurian Candidate
Mississippi Burning
The Conversation
Bonnie & Clyde
From here to eternity
To Sir with love.

Like Westerns?  If so, then watch "The Magnificent Seven" on the 27th and "Shane" on the 30th.  They don't get any better than this.

They also run specific actors and actresses and they play their movies all day.

Try these on for size:

Cary Grant - August 9th

Elvis - August 16

John Wayne - August 18

Here is the monthly schedule to keep you busy.

August

http://www.tcm.com/schedule/month/?cid=N&timezone=EST&oid=8/1/2009

And September

http://www.tcm.com/schedule/month/?cid=N&timezone=EST&oid=9/1/2009

They're not all old or B & W.  There are lots of color movies and often we find something more recent.  Classics all the way.  And for some reason, I just don't see "Bruno" ever being aired on this Classic channel.

Do you?

 Pat,

I was about 15 when I saw Gone With the Wind for the first time. It was in one of those great old theaters in New York City. You know with a screen the size of an ice rink, plush velvet chairs and draperies everywhere. The perfect ambiance for the perfect film. I had read the book at least five times (no exaggeration, I kept it my my bedside and read a little each night to get to sleep. Once I finished it, I'd just start over again). It is my all-time favorite book of all times. If you like the movie, I strenuously recommend you get the book. As with all books taken to the "silver screen" there is a myriad of characters that don't make it into the movie yet when you read the book you feel they are integral to telling the story properly. If you have a wife's birthday or an anniversary coming up, buy it for her. Trust me on this. Then you'll have the elusive two-fer - you both equally enjoyed it. Except of course, if she's like me and she wants to read it over and over  Grin,

I'll know you've read it when you can tell me about Will Benteen. I'll know you've seen it when you tell us how you don't know nothing 'bout birthing babies.  Wink  Grin Cool

Enjoy!

I'll see your "huh" and raise you a "what the hell?!"

What we have here is that that was the last thing I had in my "Cut and paste" feature from my post to her before the one I wrote to you. I obviously got distracted and the rest is well, I don't know how the hell to account for it so I'm just going to go in and adjust it for posterity.

Anyway, enjoy Gone With The Wind.

Luckily TCM also broadcasts in HDTV on channel 734.   Even the B & W stuff looks great and I get to enjoy the old classics all over again.

I lowered the bar a bit last night.  I stumbled across "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" so I stopped and watched it for the 100th time.  That's one of those movies that you can still laugh at even though you've seen it many times in the past.  Hey, a classic in it's own right and still very funny.
