That's an amazing video!  Hopefully Moby will visit us more often during the summer and keep us all entertained.

It is pretty cool, but it worries me somewhat. Whales usually travel in pods and this one was alone. With the Gulf Gusher proceeding to spew poison(and BP adding to it with their choice of a more poisonous dispersant), I'm wondering if this poor guy is sick?  Sad

Or maybe he came to warn us?

I think you're on to something there.  Perhaps that large wave was a - "Hey, we're out here - don't forget about us!"  A SpokesWhale for the whole community.

Hmm... perhaps it was a wave saying "Please leave us alone"?

A little history: Before we "discovered" crude oil, whale oil was used for lighting all across America. Some species of whales were driven to near extinction, driving up the price of whale oil. That economic incentive drove people to Pennsylvania to mine the oil deposits to refine into lighting fuel. The corporate name "Standard Oil" referred to the replacement of expensive whale oil with cheap refined crude oil (I believe it was kerosene, but don't quote me).

He might have been scared about our declining crude oil extraction and hoping to convince us to leave his brothers alone instead of using their blubber to light our houses again.

Thank God my daughter hasn't figured out a way to rescue whales yet! I'm sure we will end up bathing sea birds with dish soap when the oil hits our shores. Embarrassed
