China's nine-day traffic jam stretches 100km
Mon Aug 23, 9:18 am ET

BEIJING (AFP) – Thousands of vehicles were bogged down Monday in a more than 100-kilometre (62-mile) traffic jam leading to Beijing that has lasted nine days and highlights China's growing road congestion woes.

The Beijing-Tibet expressway slowed to a crawl on August 14 due to a spike in traffic by cargo-bearing heavy trucks heading to the capital, and compounded by road maintenance work that began five days later, the Global Times said.

The state-run newspaper said the jam between Beijing and Jining city had given birth to a mini-economy with local merchants capitalising on the stranded drivers' predicament by selling them water and food at inflated prices.

That stretch of highway linking Beijing with the northern province of Hebei and the Inner Mongolia region has become increasingly prone to massive jams as the capital of more than 20 million people sucks in huge shipments of goods.

Traffic slowed to a snail's pace in June and July for nearly a month, according to earlier press reports.

The latest clog has been worsened by the road improvement project, made necessary by highway damage caused by a steady increase in cargo traffic, the Global Times said.

China has embarked in recent years on a huge expansion of its national road system but soaring traffic periodically overwhelms the grid.

The congestion was expected to last into mid-September as the road project will not be finished until then, the newspaper said.

The roadway is a major artery for the supply of produce, coal and other goods to Beijing.

I'm not too proud to walk up and down Rt9 or 195 and sell water and snacks.

That story reminds me of the movie "The Great American Traffic Jam" (something like that from late 70's or early 80's) when they brought in the port-a-pots by helicopter making fun of California Traffic Jams.

Speaking of route 9 traffic, it took me two and a half hours to get from West Farms Road to Toms River at eleven o'clock in the morning yesterday. It started backing up around Aldi's and slowed to a crawl shortly thereafter.

Lakewood has been building thousands of town homes and apartments along route 9, which at this point is just a narrow 2 lane road with no sidewalks. Unlike downtown Lakewood there are no sidewalks, either. These people must drive to school, work and shopping.

It's unlikely that the state is going to widen route 9 there. It's also unlikely that Lakewood is going to stop building more mass housing as long as they can fill them.

This is going to present a serious problem for Howell and they aren't likely to shop in Howell stores either.

I wish our zoning board and town government would recognize that we really don't need more business on route 9. It will just starve the existing businesses as commuters pass them by and shoppers look for easier places to get to.  Perhaps Freehold or Brick. Route 9 (as a highway) pretty much dead ends in Lakewood.

Jackie, if you want a partner to sell water and snacks on 9 count me in. We'll probably be joined by homeless window washers when they find that they have a captive audience.

It appears that you do not shop in Howell on a Sunday.
If you go to Target,Lowes,Walmart,TJ Max
You would see that it appears to be about 75% Lakewood shoppers.
Also during the week the Lakewood shoppers add a substatial amount to the
Howell economy.

Sunday? It's any day. Let's say it - out loud. Were it not for the continually burgeoning Hasidic community in and around Howell, those malls might have tumbleweeds blowing through the lots. You think the merchant owners aren't aware of and grateful for such a loyal customer base?
