Sibling Rivalry in Downtown Freehold
by Colleen Curry on September 2nd, 2010 Comment

Now that Kruise Night has officially cruised away, what are you gonna do with your Thursday nights?

Alina and Justin Zimmerman, of the acoustic duo Sibling Rivalry, play regularly at the gazebo in Downtown Freehold.

You can catch some fresh new tunes, for one. The family duo Sibling Rivalry, made up of bro-and-sis acoustic team Justin and Alina Zimmerman of Howell, will be playing a two-hour set of original music tonight and again tomorrow night at the gazebo on Main Street, sponsored by Downtown Freehold.

The Zimmermans, who both play with the Nerds-creation The Punks, have been writing and playing their own music since middle school. Justin, now 17 and a senior at Howell High School, writes most of their songs-- a mix of love songs, Christian-themed uplifting songs, and "serious songs," according to his mom--and plays guitar and piano, while Alina, 14, plays the drums and sings.

Justin cites a spectrum of musical influences, from Bon Jovi to Daughtry, in his acoustic-pop melodies. He has spent the past few years receiving formal training on music reading, since he is mostly self-taught and blessed with a good ear, mom Lisa Zimmerman said. As he learned to play and experimented with songwriting, he piqued his sister's interest.

"She's like a bird," Justin said. "I'd sing, and she'd be whistling along. She'd hear songs on the radio and just sing right along."

Alina was recruited to join the Punks on select songs in the band's early days (Justin began playing with the group when he was 9), and eventually the siblings decided to play their original songs together.

"It's interesting," Justin said of playing with his sister. "Sibling Rivalry is the name for a reason."

The Zimmermans both hope to find professional success with their music. Come catch them before they're famous as they play from 7-9 tonight and 6:30-9:30 tomorrow night at the gazebo.

It's inbetween the municipal parking lot and the sidewalk alongside the Hall of Records building.
